Andreas Schmid Group expands transshipment capacity in Southern Germany
Extension at the European terminal in Gersthofen completed
Gersthofen, February 16, 2026. The freight terminal of the Andreas Schmid Group has been expanded with a new extension. With this new construction, the Gersthofen-based logistics company is responding to continuously increasing shipment volumes from national and international groupage networks.
- The extension increases the terminal’s size in Gersthofen from 8,000 m² to 11,500 m² – an increase of 44%.
- Daily handling capacity rises by 1,000 shipments to 6,000 shipments per day; annually, around 1.5 million shipments can now be handled in Gersthofen.
- The roof will be equipped with a photovoltaic system, enabling the site’s electricity demand of approximately 400,000 kWh per year to be fully covered.
More space for efficient transshipment
The Andreas Schmid Group has operated the freight terminal in Gersthofen since 1999. On the previous 8,000 m², an average of around 5,000 shipments are handled every day. During seasonal peaks in spring, the terminal reached its capacity limits several times in recent years, requiring the additional use of a second hall.
The demolition of an old logistics building not only created space for the new facility and an additional 3,500 square meters of handling area, but also laid the infrastructural foundation for integrating further European linehaul connections into the German groupage network.
However, the extension offers significant advantages beyond supporting the company’s growth, explains Konrad Wenninger, Managing Director of Andreas Schmid Freight Forwarding: “The new capacities enable even faster and more reliable processing of our shipments at a consistently high-quality level – a clear benefit for our customers. At the same time, the new building creates a significantly more comfortable working environment for our drivers and warehouse staff. Underfloor heating in the new area not only ensures stable temperatures to protect our customers’ goods but also provides noticeable comfort for our team during the colder months. Overall, the hall extension represents a tangible improvement for everyone involved in daily handling operations.”
Focus on sustainability and modern infrastructure
In constructing the extension, the Andreas Schmid Group consistently relied on sustainable building methods. The entire roof of the hall will be equipped with a high-performance photovoltaic system to supply the terminal with electricity. Heat generation is provided by a groundwater heat pump.
Infrastructure for truck drivers has also been improved: new sanitary facilities increase comfort and the quality of on-site amenities. The expanded terminal features 162 loading bays and is therefore optimally designed to handle rising shipment volumes. Construction work began on March 4, 2024, with commissioning carried out step by step. Fire protection in the existing building was also enhanced through fire-retardant coatings and the installation of additional fire protection walls.
Growth plans for national and international operations
With the expansion, the Andreas Schmid Group is strengthening not only its capacities but also its role within international networks. The terminal in Gersthofen serves as the central transshipment hub for all groupage shipments in the company’s IDS region—Germany’s largest groupage network—while also acting as a platform for European linehaul services.
In addition to daily connections to Italy and Austria, regular direct services operate to Malta, Romania, Poland, Czech Republic and Serbia, for example. Logistics companies in these countries feed their groupage shipments into the German network via the Gersthofen terminal and benefit from the delivery standards of the IDS network. Close connections to almost all European countries are maintained through a strong partner network. This provides the foundation for implementing the Andreas Schmid Group’s growth strategy in the European market while further strengthening the Gersthofen site.
New board member with international expertise
Since January 1, 2026, Thomas Schledorn has joined the executive board at the Gersthofen site. With extensive experience in European overland transport, including roles at DB Schenker and cargo-partner (part of the NX Group), he focuses on strengthening international partnerships for the Gersthofen location. Schledorn emphasizes: “The terminal is unique in Southern Germany in terms of size, modernity and the professionalism of its operations. In particular, the company’s strong position in the German groupage market and the international growth opportunities created by the new facility were key factors in my decision to take on this role.”
