Powerful relief
Exoskeletons for a safer working environment in contract logistics
Gersthofen, 8 March 2024. Innovation and artificial intelligence are not only applied in the digital world. They can also be helpful in dealing with physical challenges, such as those encountered in warehouses. In contract logistics projects where heavy loads still need to be moved manually, the Andreas Schmid Group is utilising exoskeletons for a year now. This technology safeguards the health of employees and prevents work-related accidents.
The exoskeleton is a type of robot that supports movement patterns with artificial intelligence. Similar to a backpack, it is strapped onto the legs and upper body. The device alleviates stress on the lower back by lifting weights of up to 30 kg at one go. The exoskeleton first gained recognition in the medical field for assisting physically impaired patients. Now, however, the technology is increasingly making its way into the worlds of healthcare, industry and logistics.
Customized support as needed
At the Andreas Schmid Group, these devices have been in use since April 2023. One of the first users was Amir Mujadžić, who currently works in warehouse logistics for a pet supply retailer and is involved in beverage logistics.
“At the beginning it felt a bit unfamiliar,” says Amir Mujadžić as he lifts bags of pet food onto the pallet truck. “I had to figure out the right level of assistance for me personally.” The level of support provided by the exoskeletons can be adjusted individually. To do this, Amir Mujadžić uses the control device attached to his hip like a belt. The device does not bear the full load. The entire weight still rests on his arms, which is also important to ensure freedom of movement. The exoskeleton primarily relieves the lower back and thus the spinal discs.
